Gray Box Gallery

Ella Sharp Museum is a place for everyone to explore, engage in, and enjoy history, science, and the arts. The museum has been at the forefront of local efforts to connect everyone, especially young people, with art, science, and history in a meaningful way. We are currently transforming an underused gallery to create a local space that is one-of-a-kind for the exploration of the interaction of art, science, and history. We need your support to bring artists, scientists, historians, and collaborative exhibits into this space during the first year.

Like a “black box” theatre, this space will be unadorned leaving room for artists, scientists, and historians to shape the space in innovative ways. Like a modern art gallery with blank white walls providing an unobtrusive background for art to be appreciated without distraction, the new gallery will be a stand-alone space for an uninterrupted experience. The concept of the “gray box” gallery is in its ultimate flexibility and adaptability, not locked into either the black box or blank white walls, but an in-between space that can transform in a myriad of ways to support storytelling, scientific understanding, historical insight, and artistic expression.

Jackson is a dynamic community that has undergone periods of rapid transformation as well as slow change over time. Jackson is a connected community, located at a critical juncture along important transportation routes that link Chicago, Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Toledo, Fort Wayne, and a wide variety of urban and rural communities. Through the Gray Box Gallery, we intend to empower local artistic expression to embrace the in-between and changing nature of Jackson as we tell the stories and share the experiences that have shaped our past and will shape our future.
